Hello again!

Your first ever business venture is a piece of old cake. You know it all. You have all the knowledge, passion, drive and determination to make sure this will work! Or so you think.

The early stages are extremely busy. You are running around doing a million necessary things to finally open those franchise doors, start that small factory or start supplying the best ever service to many other businesses.

During this time you are getting signals and messages from any number of people saying, do this or make sure you think of that. What we often don't do at this stage is listen to at least some of them! Why? We know it all ok, that's why. Or so we think. We don't do enough planning. We are impatient. We are itching to get it going now!

  4. Tell Us What You Think!

Why don't we seek some good advice first? There is plenty of it. Guys like Peter Carruthers in South Africa offer great advice to business owners. Not to mention the Internet and the many great books and magazines out there.

Without irritating Nike, I think when starting a business, the slogan should read, 'Listen, plan, listen again, plan some more, be patient, protect yourself and then, just do it.'

So why do so few business start-ups fail to learn from others? Human nature? Perhaps, but I think it all boils down to a lack of experience. There is no substitute for the 'University of Life'. Unfortunately in so many cases this experience comes at a cost. Some call it 'school fees'. Others call it liquidation.

Without this experience, the reality of starting a business can be very painful.

With Ka-Ching! we are encouraging very young entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs gain this experience, with parents as their guides.

The environment in which they learn is non-threatening and mistakes are allowed. Parents can explain that it's how one picks oneself up after the mistake that matters, and mistakes are often how one learns.

By completing the Ka-Ching! Business Parenting course they will have started and run any number of different ventures. 'Real-life business experience' in a supportive non-threatening environment.

They will have a far better idea of what a business requires when they finally leave school or university.

Some great feedback from one of the Ka-Ching! families:

Hi Greg,

Just thought I would let you know about our week.

We have set up the Do It Daily chore system. We have always done chores but this is much more organized.

I also set up a paid chore system for my three oldest children. This weekend they cleaned the dogs mess up from the garden, vacuumed my car, made snacks for the week and played an educational game with their younger brother.

I have been reading ahead in the manual and have started thinking about where we are headed next. Our 7.5 yo is ready to go with her business but she needs to earn a bit more in her IGAF before she can buy the machine she needs and our 11 yo is talking about her business but that involves a whole lot more time on my behalf...so we need to think it out carefully.

Blessings

Wendy

I thought I would repeat an email I received from a parent who's son missed out on basic financial and business education at school:

Case study: "Hi Greg, I think I mentioned to you that my son is 23 years of age, did nothing with the study I paid for at Cape Tech, I made him leave home and he waitered and hardly managed to support himself doing it. Anyway he hit rock bottom and I gave him one last chance to move back home and make good. He is working at Standard Bank as a casual teller now and has a contract until end August. I am thrilled that he is settled and is taking care of himself but as he is earning so very little (R17 an hour!), he cannot even contemplate moving out poor guy. He keeps trying to think of ways to go into business for himself and I keep having the feeling that he just might get an idea of how to go about it from Ka-Ching! so that the picture is not so onerous. I just wish that at school they had been given a course like you have to offer instead of some of the worthless subjects they seem to do! Any comments from you would be appreciated" Concerned Parent, 12 June 2006
