In the University of Cape Town’s Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) of 2004, SA ranked 24th out of 34 countries surveyed for their entrepreneurship activity.

The survey acknowledges “entrepreneurship is a vital ingredient in national economic growth and development” but recommends dramatic improvements in the quality of education and appropriate entrepreneurship education be offered in schools.

Entrepreneur Greg Bunyard has moved to address this through Ka-Ching, a course for children between the ages of six and 17, to complement entrepreneurship being taught in schools as part of the economic and management science curriculum.

Bunyard has approached a number of schools in Cape Town and the course has been integrated with the existing curriculum.

It encourages parents and teachers to become involved in the development of their children’s education by helping them set up a business.

“Our philosophy is Ka-Ching is not a board game or a text book, but is designed for use in a school and home environment to set up a real-life business,” Bunyard says.

He came up with the idea for Ka-Ching, a name meant to emulate the sound of an opening cash register, with the help of his step-father, Midge Hilton-Green, who pioneered the introduction of entrepreneurship and financial awareness programmes to the formal school curriculum while he was headmaster of Kingswood Junior School in Grahamstown in the 1980s. “Seeing the passion of youngsters setting up real businesses in a school environment inspired me to develop course material in order to pass it on to parents,” Bunyard says.

The Shuttleworth Foundation, which supports concepts for the development of maths, science, technology and entrepreneurship, is the sole sponsor and provided R350000 to develop and package the course and set up a website.

Bunyard says Ka-Ching is aimed at younger children as they derive the maximum benefit.

As GEM suggests, entrepreneurship education, especially at primary school level, can have a significant influence on pupils’ desire to start a business and their understanding of business issues.

“The course helps to generate enthusiasm create the discipline needed to run a business, for example how to handle money and how to accurately record business transactions,” Bunyard says.

The business projects suggested as suitable for young entrepreneurs include retail — buying a product and reselling it at a profit; service — doing tasks for people at an agreed fee, such as a gardening service; or manufacturing a product and selling it at a profit."
