Hello All!

In 2006 we hope to hear from many of you about your attempts to run small businesses.

As more and more schools become aware of our website and as more and more boys and girls join Ka-Ching! we will be able to share our ideas, our successes and our failures so that we can learn from each other – perhaps even open up new markets for your products in other parts of the country or perhaps even franchising your mini-businesses to similar groups of boys and girls in other cities!

Our latest news comes from Bishops Prep School in Cape Town where we were told of the following awards being made:

The Grade 7 company “Crazy Sales’ walked away with awards for the Most Successful Manufacturing Company; the Most Successful Service Company as well as the award for the Most Successful Company overall! The Warehouse Company received the award for the best company in the Retail sector. Well done to all involved.

As we said in our last letter, the companies traded on only 3 days at the midmorning and lunch breaks and earned between R1500 and R5000 during that time period.

Paul Lassen Managing Director of Crazy Sales said that the course provided a “great experience” but that it was very stressful when things didn’t go as according to what was planned. He felt that trading should have taken place on a few more days. Individual awards went to Tavis Dalton (Best Financial Director), Luc Vermeer (Best Marketing Director), Brian Faure (Best Advertising Director), Ryan Li (Best Company Secretary) and to Jamie Strang for the best company portfolio.

The following comments of some of the boys are worth taking note of:

“Business is stressful and positive encouragement is important. One has a better chance of surviving if ones income is constant”(Zach Hendrix)

“Dealing with money is very time consuming”(Tavis Dalton).

“Financial Directors calculations need to be carefully checked because it is very easy to make a mistake.”(Ryan Li)

“Personal conflicts can be stressful and one should also be wary of depending on only one good idea”(Chris McPetrie)

Jamie Strang regarded accurate record keeping and strict control as essential.

Brian Faure felt there was great benefit from working in groups because of the opportunity to discuss various issues and because of the likelihood of new ideas being generated.

Simon Everingham felt that accurate market research was essential as was the employment of responsible and hardworking people.

Well done to the boys at Bishops, lets hear from some more achievements from other boys and girls across the country.

A new exciting development is the Ka-Ching! partnership with the Lighthouse Centre of Learning in Cape Town in which their pupils will all be introduced to the Ka-Ching! Business Parenting course. We ran a staff development seminar earlier this month for the teachers who will be involved in teaching the Ka-Ching! concepts, but more of this next time.

Best regards as always.
