Hello again.
One of the lessons I learned from my industrial psychology classes back in the days when PW was waiving that finger ferociously at most, was credited to either Maslow or Jung or some other shrink, 'human beings are inherently lazy'. The reason this has stuck in my gray matter for so long is because I am terrified of being burdened with the same label!
One of the families involved with Ka-Ching! is certainly trying hard to break away from this same nasty label. She writes, 'Greg , you may enjoy to hear how my son Benjamin is investing in his IGAF'. For those of you who don't know, the IGAF is the Income Generating Asset Fund. Scary you may think? Well actually its something that we cover at length in the course and, in my humble opinion, is absolutely crucial to grasp if one wants our children to become financially self-sufficient.

'Benjamin seemed to fly through the introductory stages of the course. He started to really come into his own when it came to deciding where to invest his IGAF. We hold regular business meetings on a Thursday when there's nothing much on TV – which is most nights by the way. Anyway these meetings are way more fun! We've made it very informal by including Pizza as part of the meeting. We sit around the table gormandizing and discussing a few business ideas. It has become such a fun night!'
'Anyway after some time brainstorming various investment ideas, Benjamin chose to invest in Rabbits. He explained to us the Rabbit problem in Australia and reckoned that his assets would be growing even while he slept. We laughed so loud, but very soon realized he was serious. We are quite lucky because we live on a fairly large property so building a warren and using left over vegetables to feed the hungry little mites has been quite easy.'
'He sells them to the local pet shop and with our help keeps records of his transaction's. I am sure he will soon invest in other assets, and the warren will become Braai wood, the 'breeding-machines' sold to pet shops and my garden restored to its original glory!'
This is just some feedback from the many kids involved with Ka-Ching! What Benjamin has learned is the value of taking some of your cash, from in his case pocket money, and investing some of it in an asset that appreciates and hopefully generates further income. It doesn't matter how much money you have the principal remains the same. Just imagine if you were lucky enough to have learned the concept of investing from 12 years old – Benjamin's age?
Now please don't now go investing in Rabbits! We don't need any additional Australian challenges at home. We have plenty already thanks very much!
Warm regards,
Gregory Bunyard

KA-CHING! HOLIDAY IDEAS
If you want to get your youngsters out of your hair and perhaps earning some extra pocket money and learning some valuable business lessons over the holidays, here are some ideas:
Water Sports for Hire: If you're at the sea and have friends with windsurfers, paddle ski's or other crafts they are willing to loan, then your youngsters may have a decent rental business on the beach. Make sure you have indemnity forms and life jackets!
Pizza Delivery: Again I know of a great Pizza Shop at our seaside spot but they don't have a delivery option. Maybe offer the Pizza Shop a bicycle delivery service for a couple of hours in the evening, or better still tie up a contract and start a holiday delivery service using other youngsters who use their parents cars!
Holiday Shopping: Facing the crowds over your holiday has got to be the worst thing. Maybe consider offering a holiday shopping service. You could even arrange for the shop management to do all the dirty work for you i.e. picking, packing and delivery.
Lessons teaching stuff – windsurfing, skiing, kite surfing, fishing and mussel gathering. A great way for your youngsters to meet that perfect little holiday romance!

We would love to hear more and more feedback from other parents involved with the Ka-Ching! Business Parenting Course, so please let us have any feedback about you and your familie's progress.
Here is an email I received from a parent who's son missed out on basic financial and business education at school. I am repeating it because I think it speaks volumes:

Case study: "Hi Greg, I think I mentioned to you that my son is 23 years of age, did nothing with the study I paid for at Cape Tech, I made him leave home and he waitered and hardly managed to support himself doing it. Anyway he hit rock bottom and I gave him one last chance to move back home and make good. He is working at Standard Bank as a casual teller now and has a contract until end August. I am thrilled that he is settled and is taking care of himself but as he is earning so very little (R17 an hour!), he cannot even contemplate moving out poor guy. He keeps trying to think of ways to go into business for himself and I keep having the feeling that he just might get an idea of how to go about it from Ka-Ching! so that the picture is not so onerous. I just wish that at school they had been given a course like you have to offer instead of some of the worthless subjects they seem to do! Any comments from you would be appreciated" Concerned Parent, 12 June 2006
