Hello again

The fabulous developments coming out of Broadhurst Primary in Botswana is really something. Late last year, Tim and Robyn Jackson set up a Ka-Ching! Entrepreneurs Club. I have repeated some of the eager young entrepreneurs feedback below (please excuse the grammar).

You can comment on these stories on My Blog.

"My name is Tumo Masire. I joined Ka-Ching! for two reasons, the one is that my mom wants me to become a business man and the other is that I want to learn how to run a fluent business I learnt that if you do not have a good attitude you will not get paid."

"The hard things where finding jobs. In the end I found jobs like washing cars & dishes, making breakfast, setting the table, unsetting etc. I found the course fun and exciting."

"My name is Dylan Sequeira, I joined the Ka-Ching! Club at the beginning of the year. I have made a lot of money and saved over P200. I have 9 ad-hoc jobs and my favourite was washing the cars. I stacked papers for my Dad in the office. The worst job was cleaning and put my brothers shoes in the cupboard."

"Hi, my name is Daryl and this way of earning money is very exciting for me. The ad-hoc jobs I have done has made my mother very happy as one of them is rubbing her feet after she has had a run. Other jobs have been looking after my 2 year old sister and washing her hair. My favourite job is making breakfast and supper. I am saving up for a TV in my bedroom."

"Hi my name is Darren. Ka-Ching! was new at our school and I decided to give it a go and I loved it. I earned over 250 Pula but to get my money I had to do my "Do it daily" and do lots of ad-hoc jobs. I washed the car, polished the wooden giaraffes and made a lot of mess in the kitchen while trying to make tea, coffee and hot chocolate. The job I liked the most was washing the car. The job I hated the most was making hot chocolate."

"Hi, I am a Broadhurst Primary Teacher. The enthusiasm of the pupils has been amazing. From day one I was able to see which pupils are natural entrepeneurs! We have worked step by step through the programme and some of the pupils are about to apply for their bronze certificates. The ad-hoc jobs have been varied and fun. De-ticking dogs (we have a big tick problem here!!), sharpening the class pencils, taking Gran for walks in her wheelchair and so the list goes on. I will introduce the copper level now so that those pupils who are ready, may run with it during the holidays."

"Each week we have taken one of the 'success skills' and worked with that - this has not been difficult as many of these skills are put into daily use from reception at Broadhurst."

It is so encouraging to see what sterling work these youngsters are doing! Well done to Robyn and her team. And Dylan, Tumo, Daryl and Darren, well done to you too. Keep going and enjoy the exciting journey ahead. We look forward to sending your first Ka-Ching! Certificate -- I am sure it will be one of many to come.

Good luck!

Case study:"Lee-Ann and Craig were very excited about starting their first business at home. As brother and sister they agreed they would make a strong team.

Together with the folks, they had great fun chatting, eating pizza and brainstorming what types of businesses would work in their area. These informal business meetings become great fun! Their parents helped guide the process and managed to make it exciting. The budding entrepreneurs held weekly meetings to plan the launch of 'Suzy's Saucy Salad Dressing', and were extremely excited at the prospect of receiving all that money from selling salad dressing to their school friends and relatives.

However, when the parents explained again that they would have to pay for the ingredients, and rent for using the kitchen facilities, the profit wasn't as much as they thought. They expressed horror and shock at having to pay from "our own money"."The Blewett family, Somerset West, 16 February 2007

We continue to be most encouraged, that so many positive signs continue coming through from families learning together.

Here is some more feedback I am repeating from the independent research completed back in 2005:

Case study: "Lindsay has two children - Pumla and Bongi, aged 8 and 5 respectively. It has always been a struggle for Lindsay to get the children to do their daily chores and it is difficult for her to enforce these as she works long hours. Through the Ka-Ching! programme, Lindsay has implemented a Do-It-Daily Pocket Money System. Every morning Lindsay leaves a list on the fridge of chores that Pumla and Bongi must complete that day and checks that they are done when she gets home in the evening. Payment is only given if each and every one of the chores is completed. She has been astounded by the results: her children seldom slip up on their chores these days, because they know that there is a reward in it for them. This has also helped her children develop a sense of responsibility."Impact Consulting, 1 July 2005
